Caramel Apple Bars

If you love apple pie (and I believe everybody does) you will love these caramel apple bars. You can serve it as a nice candy or as a dessert as well.

Ingredients:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
2 cups quick cooking oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 cups melted butter
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 cups apples
1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 cups caramel ice cream topping

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 F.  Grease a 15x10 inch pan. Peel, core and slice the apples.
In a large bowl, combine the quick cooking oats, flour, baking soda and brown sugar. Stir in the melted butter and mix until crumbly. Press 1/2 of this mixture into the prepared baking pan. Place in the oven and bake for 8 minutes.
Heat a small pan over medium heat. Combine the caramel topping with the remaining 1/2 cup of flour into the pan.
Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes. This is the caramel filling.
Spread the apple slices evenly over the baked crust and sprinkle with the walnuts. Then Pour the caramel filling over the apple layer.
Then crumble the remaining crust mixture over the top. Return to the oven and bake again for 25 minutes until golden brown.
Let cool and cut into bars.
